BSD City, July 3, 2020 — In order to commemorate the World Environment Day every June 5, Sinar Mas Land held the online 17th BSD City Green Festival (Festival Hijau BSD City) and was open to the public. This event was meant to encourage the general public so they would care more about the environment by taking real actions for it. The theme of this year’s BSD City Green Festival was “Empowering People in Building Food Security”. It was held as an educational campaign for the community to teach them to meet their dietary needs themselves, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, by cultivating their own vegetables, processing their food, or utilizing domestic waste. Supendi Akbar, S.Pd., an educational and environmental activist, was responsible for teaching the community how to do those things.

The 17th BSD City Green Festival began on May 12, 2020, by delivering information on the event followed by series of environmental education on Food Security (May 18, 2020), Domestic Waste Management (June 2, 2020), Plant Nursery and Planting (June 8, 2020), and Making Organic Fertilizers (June 15, 2020). Later, the company provided waste odor removing chemicals for the South Tangerang Environmental Service, especially for Cipeucang Landfill.
Part of the festival was held as a webinar for Sinar Mas Land and other Sinar Mas’ business units employees only, with “Manage Waste Wisely by Individual Waste Utilization” as its theme. The 17th BSD City Green Festival’s main event took place on Friday (July 3, 2020) virtually, opened by speeches from Deputy Group CEO of Sinar Mas Land Monik William, Tangerang Regent Ahmed Zaki Iskandar, South Tangerang Mayor Airin Rachmi Diany, as well as Heads of Tangerang Regency and South Tangerang Environmental Services. The festival participants and Sinar Mas Land or Sinar Mas’ other business units employees performed the planting trees ceremony and other environmentally-friendly activities in their neighborhoods or work sites virtually, and all participants could see it via Zoom.
This year’s Green Festival invited local musician Dik Doank who performed a song called “Rumahku Surgaku” (Home Sweet Home). The entire event was done online as a safety precaution against the Covid-19 virus.
“Sinar mas Land through PT BSD consistently tries to educate people to manage household waste wisely. With various events on environmental issues, including the Green Festival that so far we have made 17 times, we want the community to actively protect the environment by reducing their waste. It starts from themselves and then their families as the smallest part of the society. Therefore, we continuously inform and educate the community, including students, teachers, local figures, even our own employees,” says Monik.
Meanwhile, Ahmed and the Tangerang Regency Governmentthanked Sinar Mas Land for delivering a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program on environmental causes with its Green Festival. In his opinion, this event taught a valuable lesson on the environmental issues to the Tangerang Regency residents.
The event also gained a positive response from Airin. She found the Green Festival was an excellent event and everyone had to support it. She hoped there would be more people caring about environmental development. “Thank you PT BSD and Sinar Mas Land for contributing so much to the development of environmental, social, cultural, and other causes,” she said.
Lastly, Corporate Affairs Division Head of Sinar Mas Land Dony Martadisata said the company hoped the Green Festival, initiated by Sinar Mas Land’s CSR Team through PT BSD, would prove the company’s determination, commitment, and care for environmental protection. In addition, he also hoped all of the festival participants would become environmental activists and inspire the general public to take real actions for environmental causes and to achieve food security for their families.
